TORP Bite - Story and Highlights

The whole TORP idea started thanks to our two sons. Since they were born, they have been riding with us – in a bike trailer, on a balance bike, or bicycle towbar trailer, until finally by themselves, riding their own bikes. Later on, we needed to decide for a 20” kid’s mountain bike. We come from the area surrounded by mountains. Cross country riding is our daily bread and that is why I started to look for something special into off-road conditions. I was, however, very disappointed. I didn’t find anything on the market that would satisfy what I and my kids were looking for. So there came an idea to experiment on our own.

Kids’ requirements were sound and clear. We want a decent bike with all the bits and pieces that is on a bike of mommy and daddy. It included a suspension fork, a high number of gears, disc brakes, bottle cage and last but not least, it needed to have the same look, with the bended tube. I started looking through the discussion forums and all sorts of related pages, gathering information, later ordering components – new and used ones, working them and shaping them to my vision. And so, the TORP and its first prototype of the model Bite came to existence. We welded a few versions. Kids were testing them out in the field and we were analyzing and evaluating.

From the very beginning, we wanted to go against the trend of aluminum and carbon frames (even though, I admit, our first frames were made of aluminum). Our goal was to create a light bike from quality steel. Steel can be shaped into unique designs. It is more flexible and as a result it absorbs vibrations in the terrain. And of course, it is more solid, even indestructible. This feature is not negligible since children drop the bike on the ground often carelessly. Gradually, people from our surroundings started to be interested in this project, and so a team TORP was founded and the project has been evolving. And the result of the 2 year endeavor is the TORP Bite.

Unique Design

We have created a unique design made of 4130 CrMo AH steel tubes that are specially shaped. We have chosen steel because this material is more flexible, absorbs vibrations in the terrain and it is more solid, even indestructible.

Custom Tuned Air Fork

We tuned air fork by installing a new cartridge. It is more sensitive and has an option to adjust air pressure and rebound.

Progressive Geometry

We have prolonged the frame front triangle, lowered the upper tube, shortened the chain stay and slacken the head angle. We have achieved that TORP Bite is more stable in the terrain, responds instantly to the change of direction, takes off easier and is great fun to ride. Kids simply love it!

Made in Slovakia

Honestly hand-made from frame to a final bike. We make with love, we enjoy our work and are proud of it.

TORP BITE - COMPONENTS IN DETAIL

TORP Bite is made from high quality components - from tires to grips. These have been carefully chosen after a long period of testing with kids in the beautiful mountains of Slovakia.

10 speed by Sram GX

Trigger shifter works with the 10-speed rear derailleur and 11-36t cassette. In cooperation with the 30t chainring, it gives children a sufficient scale whilst pedaling uphill, as well as downhill. We have chosen the trigger shift to allow children to learn from an early age how to hold grips, how to control the shifting with their thumb and be ready to use the brake levers with their forefinger.

TORP 125 mm crank arms

The length of the crank arms should be 10% of the child height. We have designed and CNC machined kids crankset with 64BCD. Optional BCD104 is possible by using a special adapter (standard range for chainring from 22t to 38t). We have chosen an optimum length of 125 mm, after a long period of testing.

TORP Narrow-Wide 28t chainring

We have used a high quality 28t chainring with narrow and wide tooth and the slogan 'Bite your ride ... '. Such a tooth profile keeps the chain from bouncing off of the chainring and is designed for use in a more technical terrain. Thus, we eliminate the need to install extra chain tensioner or chainguide.

Disc brakes

TORP Bite is equipped with disc brakes Avid / SRAM DB3 with 160 mm rotor at the front and 140 mm rotor at the rear and with reach adjust (lever distance from the handlebar). They are effective, easy to use, reliable, and especially in descents, you will no longer need to take breaks to allow your kids rest their fingers as you would normally do using the V-brake.

Sram Slickwire shift cable kit

To make sure that the gear shift is as smooth as possible, we have used high-quality cables and wires SlickWire from SRAM. Children will definitely appreciate it!

Bike is suitable for children with height from 110 cm to 135 cm and inside leg length from 50 cm and above.

After opening the box and seeing the bicycle, Tobi cancelled all of his plans and we had to go and test the bike out. He is sending one big to the manufacturer.
